It can be done in most of the spaces in your house. However, there are some areas where tiling over drywall might not be wise. But if you really want to do it, you need to fix your drywall first. One thing you need to remember is that your drywall must be dry. You cannot put tiles over damp drywall. Tiling over damp drywall is highly discouraged. This is because it causes a lot of nasty problems around your house. We have detailed some of them below. Damp drywalls retain a lot of moisture.
Also, it draws more moisture from the environment. These will then seep through the tiles and onto the drywall. It also reaches through the wooden struts behind your drywall. These dark, damp conditions are breeding grounds for molds and bacteria.
You might not notice this before, but your tiles will start to wear off. Also, the drywall and the woodworks behind will rot. Carpenter ants, termites, woodworms are attracted to the damp drywall. Line up the tile edges with the vertical and horizontal marks on the wall to ensure that they're level and plum. Check the upper edge to make sure it lines up with the horizontal line.
Continue placing the first course of tiles in the same manner using spacers. Place strips of blue painter's tape over the tile face, sticking each end to the wall to prevent the tiles from sliding or falling off as the mastic sets. If the countertop is tiled, locate the tile that is in the middle of the counter and use that as your starting point. The backsplash visually blends in with the countertop, making it feel married to that.
As I always say. Two basic types of material are used to install wall tiles for home renovations, such as a backsplash: portland cement-based mortar, which is also known as thinset, and mastic, an organic tile adhesive used only on drywall applications like backsplashes.
This is where you center the first tile to start the backsplash project. With the counter tiled, find the tile in the center of the counter and use it as a starting point. A tiled mirror in the kitchen can be placed over clean, flat drywall, as sinks are not considered wet areas like showers that require a backing sheet.
