Windows 7 a dud

I can't remember having issues with it. Go and test it? Flash runs fine on my 64 bit win 7. Xendance , Aug 20, Wasn't flash per say, more 32bit flash under a 64bit browser. You can run Flash player on x64 of windows but not in X64 version of IE. Last edited: Aug 20, Lacusmons , Aug 20, Didn't know that. There has to be a 64 bit Opera before I notice that flash won't work in 64 bit browsers.

And not having Flash is a problem, why? Biggest pain in the ass I know with regards to the internet is flash - especially in advertising and video. You can't run flash on a 64 bit browser except for on linux you can run it in firefox. Peerless , Aug 20, Dmented , Aug 20, Win7 64bit RTM was actually worse when I had that installed.

Windows 7 is in fact just a repackaging of Windows Vista Key processes look and work much like they do under Vista, and preliminary benchmark testing shows that Windows 7 performs right on a par with its predecessor. Frankly, Windows 7 is Vista, at least under the hood; if nothing else, this should translate into excellent backward compatibility with Vista-certified applications and drivers. Except that it might not. The M3 build of Windows 7 breaks all sorts of things that, frankly, it shouldn't be breaking.

But we'd like to offer a few points in Microsoft's defense: Windows 7 remains in pre-beta , with a late release and rumors circulate the product may get delayed to And, as a colleague points out, a new Windows image often feels fast, until you load all of your usual add-ons and third-party software on top of it The impression I got from the many computers running Windows 7 here on the Consumer Electronics Show floor was that this OS can boot up in just a few seconds and allows you flexibility never before possible in Windows.

In other words, it's Vista that works. Photo gallery: Consumer Electronics Show. During Wednesday night's keynote address, Microsoft boss Steve Ballmer mentioned that the free public Beta of 7 in English, Arabic, Chinese, German and Russian versions would be available for download beginning at noon Friday through the rest of January.

The problem was Microsoft didn't expect such a huge response -- or that its server would be overloaded. Too many people wanted to try the new software at the same time.

But at last, I have been able to download a copy of the new OS and plan to install it as soon as I get home. Windows 7 is asking for an extra 9GB of free space, and neither solid-state storage versions of the Eee can do that. For the record I did see an Eee running the W7 beta at Microsoft's booth. To add insult to injury, Microsoft already had the answer up its sleeve: Windows , which was stable and glorious.

Sure, it lacked the flashy consumer bells and whistles, but it could have done the trick. Instead, Microsoft punted the ball with Me, and only began to rebound with Windows XP in which initially had its own share of problems, as we covered above. Among its problems: built-in advertising , freemium games, forced updates, data collection and privacy issues, and a Frankenstein look-and-feel that merges bits and pieces of four generations of Windows into one product, which Microsoft is still working on refining.

Windows 10 gets high marks for offering a competent desktop experience, but it somehow does touchscreen worse than Windows 8. Torn between wanting to ditch legacy Win32 apps—which Windows 10 runs poorly in high DPI modes—but keep its massive install base, Windows 10 is neither here nor there.

With Windows 10, the sometimes inscrutable updates never end. Microsoft continuously fiddles with new features, turning them off and on while orphaning apps and utilities. And there are still at least two different ways Control Panel and Settings to configure the system.

Windows 10 feels like pieces of code bolted on here and there, with no grand vision uniting them. The future awaits! Use Google Fonts in Word. Customize the Taskbar in Windows What Is svchost. Best Home Theater Systems. Best Smartwatches.
